How the AccessDrive™ Mirror Blind Spot Monitoring System Works
AccessDrive™ uses discreet vehicle-mounted sensors to monitor the areas beside and slightly behind your vehicle—zones that may be difficult to see in your mirrors. The system continuously analyzes nearby traffic and identifies vehicles, motorcycles, and other moving objects entering the monitored blind-spot area.
When a vehicle is detected, the system provides a clear visual alert on the corresponding side of the vehicle, helping you recognize a potential hazard before changing lanes. The sensors are designed to distinguish nearby moving traffic from the vehicle itself and provide monitoring while driving. Always check your mirrors and look over your shoulder before changing lanes; AccessDrive™ is a driver-assistance system and does not replace attentive driving.
Installation Instructions
Tools and supplies
- Trim-removal tool or a non-marring plastic pry tool
- Phillips and flat-head screwdrivers
- Electrical tape and cable ties
- Wire stripper/crimper and crimp connectors or equivalent automotive-grade connectors
- Multimeter or test light
- Clean cloth and isopropyl alcohol
- Optional: drill and appropriate bits if your vehicle requires custom sensor mounting
1. Prepare the vehicle
- Park on a level surface, switch off the ignition, engage the parking brake, and remove the key.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning electrical work. Wait several minutes for vehicle electronics to power down.
- Review the vehicle-specific wiring information and identify suitable left and right sensor mounting locations, the cabin display/indicator locations, and an ignition-switched power source.
- Clean all mounting surfaces with isopropyl alcohol and allow them to dry completely.
2. Mount the sensors
- Install the left and right sensors in the recommended positions, typically toward the rear corners of the vehicle and facing outward or rearward as directed by the supplied hardware.
- Keep each sensor level, unobstructed, and clear of exhaust outlets, tow equipment, heavy trim, or accessories that could interfere with detection.
- Secure the sensors firmly with the supplied brackets or approved mounting method. If drilling is required, confirm there are no wires, fuel lines, or structural components behind the drilling area before making any holes.
- Route the sensor cables toward the cabin or control module, leaving enough slack for movement but securing the harness away from hot, sharp, or moving parts.
3. Install the indicators and control module
- Position the left and right warning indicators where they are easy to see without blocking the driver’s view. Common locations include the inside edges of the mirror housings, A-pillars, or dashboard.
- Mount the control module in a dry, protected location. Avoid areas exposed to water, excessive heat, pedals, steering components, or air-bag deployment paths.
- Connect the left sensor to the left input and the right sensor to the right input. Confirm that each connector is fully seated and locked.
4. Complete the wiring and electrical setup
- Connect the system ground to a clean, unpainted chassis-ground point or the designated ground connection.
- Connect the system power lead to an ignition-switched 12 V source so the system operates only when the vehicle is on. Use the supplied fuse or an appropriately rated inline fuse close to the power connection.
- Connect the left and right indicators to their matching outputs on the control module. Do not reverse the sides.
- Route and secure the harness with cable ties. Keep wiring away from exhaust components, belts, fans, hinges, windows, and sharp edges. Protect any pass-through points with a grommet or suitable edge protection.
- Check every connection for correct polarity, solid crimps, and adequate insulation. Reconnect the negative battery terminal only after the wiring has been inspected.
5. Calibrate and test the system
- Switch on the ignition without moving the vehicle and confirm the system performs its startup check. Verify that both indicators illuminate or otherwise respond as described in the product documentation.
- If the system requires calibration, place the vehicle on level ground and follow the control module’s calibration procedure. Keep the sensor faces clean and ensure the vehicle is not carrying an unusual load during calibration.
- Confirm that the left sensor activates only the left indicator and the right sensor activates only the right indicator.
- Perform a controlled test in a safe, low-traffic area. With a second vehicle approaching from the rear on each side, verify that the appropriate warning appears when the vehicle enters the monitored zone and clears when it leaves.
- Test the system in daylight and, where safe, in conditions representative of normal use. If an indicator stays on, fails to activate, or responds on the wrong side, switch off the vehicle and recheck sensor alignment, connector seating, wiring, and calibration.
Installation and safety notes
Installation requirements can vary by vehicle. Use automotive-grade connections and follow your vehicle manufacturer’s safety procedures. Never route wiring through an air-bag deployment path or near moving, hot, or sharp components. AccessDrive™ is intended to supplement mirrors, shoulder checks, and safe lane-changing practices—it cannot detect every object or situation, and the driver remains responsible for operating the vehicle safely.
